ABSTRACT

Sub-threshold depression refers to a psychological sub-health state that fails to meet the diagnostic criteria for depression. Appropriate intervention can improve the state and reduce the risks of disease development. In this paper, we focus on music neurofeedback stimulation improving emotional state of sub-threshold depression college students.Twenty-four college students with sub-threshold depression participated in the experiment, 16 of whom were members of the experimental group. Decompression music based on spectrum classification was applied to 16 experimental group participants for 10 min/d music neural feedback stimulation with a period of 14 days, and no stimulation was applied to 8 control group participants. Three feature parameters of electroencephalogram (EEG) relative power, sample entropy and complexity were extracted for analysis. The results showed that the relative power of α、β and θ rhythm increased, while δ rhythm decreased after the stimulation of musical nerofeedback in the experimental group. The sample entropy and complexity were significantly increased after the stimulation, and the differences of these parameters pre and post stimulation were statistically significant ( < 0.05), while the differences of all feature parameters in the control group were not statistically significant. In the experimental group, the scores of self-rating depression scale(SDS) decreased after the stimulation of musical nerofeedback, indicating that the depression was improved. The result of this study showed that music neurofeedback stimulation can improve sub-threshold depression and may provides an effective new way for college students to self-regulation of emotion.

ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and stereotyped behaviors. Electroencephalograph (EEG), which can measure neurological changes associated with cortical synaptic activity, has been proven to be a powerful tool for detecting neurological disorders. The main goal of this study is to explore the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on behavioral response and EEG. We enrolled 32 autistic children, rTMS group ( = 16) and control group ( = 16) and calculated the relative power of the δ, θ, α, β rhythms in each brain area by fast Fourier transform and Welch's method. We also compared Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) scores of the patients before and after rTMS. The results showed a significant decrease in the relative power of the δ band on right temporal region and parietal region and also a decreased coherence on frontal region after rTMS intervention. The study proves that rTMS could have positive effects on behavior of attention, execution ability, and language ability of children and could reduce their stereotyped behavior and radical behavior.

Abstract Background: Zapotec is a language used mainly in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico of tonal characteristic; homophone words with difference in fundamental frequency with different meanings. Our objective was to analyze changes in the electroencephalographic (EEG) theta rhythm during word discrimination of lexical tonal bi-syllabic homophone word samples of Zapotec. Methods: We employed electroencephalography analysis during lexical tonal discrimination in 12 healthy subjects 9-16 years of age. Results: We observed an increase in theta relative power between lexical discrimination and at rest eyes-open state in right temporal site. We also observed several significant intra- and inter-hemispheric correlations in several scalp sites, mainly in left fronto-temporal and right temporal areas when subjects were performing lexical discrimination. Conclusions: Our data suggest more engagement of neural networks of the right hemisphere are involved in Zapotec language discrimination.


Resumen Introducción: El zapoteco es un lenguaje hablado principalmente en el estado de Oaxaca, en México, que tiene la característica de ser tonal; es decir, las palabras homófonas que difieren en la altura del fundamental tienen diferente significado. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar los cambios del ritmo theta del electroencefalograma en el curso de la discriminación de palabras bisilábicas homófonas en zapoteco. Método: Se empleó el análisis espectral del electroencefalograma durante la discriminación tonal léxica del lenguaje zapoteco en 12 niños sanos de 9-16 años. Resultados: Se observó una mayor potencia relativa theta en la región temporal derecha durante la discriminación léxica en comparación con el registro de reposo-ojos abiertos. También se observaron varias correlaciones significativas intra e interhemisféricas con predominio entre la región frontotemporal izquierda y temporal derecha mientras se realizaba la discriminación tonal léxica. Conclusión: Estos resultados sugieren que hay un mayor compromiso de las redes neuronales en el hemisferio derecho que participan en la discriminación del lenguaje zapoteco.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We examined how psychotropic medications affected quantitative EEG (qEEG) results among patients with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. METHODS: The drugs were clustered into nine groups depending on their mechanism. We hypothesized that drugs would affect the relative power shown in qEEG results independently and investigated the effect of each drug group on relative power using multiple linear regression analysis and independent samples t-tests. RESULTS: We found that antipsychotics other than clozapine induced an increase in the relative power of alpha activity. Clozapine markedly increased slow waves and decreased alpha activity in the occipital area. The main findings for antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs were the beta increment and lithium increased the power of delta and theta activity. However, we found no evident changes in power due to benzodiazepine. CONCLUSION: Our results are generally consistent with previous pharmaco-EEG studies, despite some differences. Therefore, the EEG effect in each drug group could be singled out even under the polypharmacy condition, with the possible exception of benzodiazepines. Our results support using a new methodological approach to identify the qEEG effects of various psychotropic drugs in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

The EEG has been widely employed in the assessment of electrophysiological changes induced by distinct medications. Its sensibility in detecting alterations produced by a specific substance may be enhanced by methods of quantitative analyses (qEEG). The present study aimed at investigating the modulatory effects of bromazepam on brain dynamics. The effects of bromazepam (3mg) on EEG power distribution were tested in 10 healthy individuals, in a double-blind experiment. The electrophysiological measure was analyzed across experimental conditions, moments, and electrodes, in the delta, theta, alpha and beta frequency bands separately. A significant decrease of relative power was observed in delta and theta (main effect of condition). No interactions were observed. Although the expected anxiolytic EEG profile was not observed (increased beta and decreased alpha activity), this specific result may be related to other factors such as dosage used and the subjects' general physiological state, and not necessarily to the drug itself.


O EEG tem sido amplamente empregado na avaliação de mudanças eletrofisiológicas induzidas por medicações distintas.A sensibilidade desta técnica em detectar alterações produzidas por uma substância pode ser aprimorada por métodos de análise quantitativa (EEGq). O presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar os efeitos modulatórios do bromazepam na dinâmica cerebral. Os efeitos de 3mg de bromazepam na distribuição de potência cortical foram observados em 10 indivíduos sadios, em um desenho duplo-cego. A medida eletrofisiológica foi analisada nas diferentes condições experimentais, momentos e eletrodos, em delta, teta, alfa e beta separadamente. Uma diminuição significativa de potência relativa foi observada em delta e teta (efeito principal para condição). Não foram observadas interações. Embora o perfil ansiolítico do EEG (aumento de beta e diminuição de alfa) não tenha sido observado, esteresultado específico pode estar relacionado a outros fatores, tais como dose utilizada e estado fisiológico dos sujeitos, e não necessariamente à droga propriamente dita.

The aim of this study is analyze possible modifications in the cerebral cortex, through quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) in patients submitted to a tendon transfer procedure (posterior tibialis) by the Srinivasan's technique. Four subjects (2 men and 2 women), 49.25 age average (SD±21.4) were studied. All subjects have been through surgical procedure due to leprosy and had, at least, two years of drop foot condition. The qEEG measured the electrocortical activity (relative power) between 8 and 25 Hz frequencies pre and post surgery. A paired t test analyzed all data (p<0,05). The results show significant alterations in the alpha relative power, electrodes F7 (p=0.01) and F8 (p=0.021). Altogether, based on findings of the current literature, we can conclude that the tendon transfer procedure suggests electrocortical alterations sensitive to specific qEEG bands.


O objetivo deste estudo é analisar possíveis modificações no córtex cerebral, através da electrencefalografia quantitativa (EEGq), em pacientes submetidos a um procedimento de transferência de tendão (tibial posterior) pela técnica de Srinivasan. Quatro sujeitos (2 homens e 2 mulheres), com média de idade de 49,25 anos (±21,4 DP) foram estudados. Todos os sujeitos realizaram o procedimento cirúrgico devido a hanseníase e tinham, pelo menos, dois anos de pé caído. O EEGq mediu a atividade electrocortical (potencia relativa) entre freqüências de 8 e 25 Hz, no pré e pós-operatório. Um teste t pareado analisou todos os dados (p<0,05). Os resultados mostram alterações significativas na potência relativa em alfa, nos elétrodos F7 (p=0,01) e F8 (p=0,021). Baseados em recentes achados na literatura, podemos concluir que o procedimento de transferência de tendão sugere alterações eletrocorticais sensíveis às freqüên-cias específicas do EEGq.
